Trace Fossils

Late Pennsylvanian, Kansas

Top and bottom--Trace fossils (technically termed ichnofossils) from the upper Pennsylvanian Kanwaka Shale, Shawnee Group of the Virgilian Stage--303 to 301 million years ago. Called scientifically, Nereites imbricata. Although the creature that created the trails has never been definitively identified, ichnofossil specialists presume that the trails represent feeding patterns left by an annelid (worm). Photographs courtesy a specific scientific publication.
