Fossil Coral

This is a transverse thin section of a slab of coral from the lower Silurian to lower Devonian Vaughn Gulch Limestone, Mazourka Canyon, Inyo County, California, revealing several corallites that comprise the coral colony. A corallite is an individual skeletal polyp, within which the actual coral animal lives. Scientific name is Australophyllum sp. The photograph is from a specific public domain document.
